Alternative Creams And Ointments For Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

If you have carpal tunnel syndrome, you want a respite from your symptoms but may not feel comfortable with the idea of surgery. Wearing a brace can help some but for real pain relief a topical cream or ointment is your best bet. There are some over-the-counter and prescription pain creams on the market that you may have tried but may not have been natural or smelled too medicinal. Fortunately, there are some other options out there for those who wish to use a natural alternative.

Arnica Gel

What it is

Arnica is a centuries old remedy for bruising and inflammation. It comes from the plant Arnica Montana.

How it works

Arnica reduces pain due to inflammation. In a double-blind, peer-reviewed scientific study released in 2002, doctors found that patients who used arnica gel for two weeks after hand surgery significantly reduced their pain compared to patients who were given a placebo. This suggests that arnica gel is an effective pain reliever for hand pain due to inflammation such as carpal tunnel.

Cannabis Cream

What it is

Cannabis cream is derived from the cannabis plant, the same plant that produces marijuana. The cream, oil, or gel is infused with cannabis oil that has been harvested and processed to be absorbed transdermally.

How it works

Topical cannabis creams will not produce a psychotropic effect, even if ingested orally. The strains of cannabis that are produced for these types of creams are bred to produce a high amount of cannabinoid THC, otherwise known as CBD. CBD products will not impair the user but are known for their pain relieving benefits.

Wintergreen Oil

What it is

Wintergreen  essential oil is derived from a plant called Gaultheria procumbens. The oil produces a heating and cooling effect at the same time, much like over-the counter creams that contain chemicals.

How it works

A small amount (a few drops) of the essential oil can be diluted in non-scented lotion or another oil like almond, olive, or coconut oil. The heating and cooling effect that the oil promotes blood circulation around the area that it is applied. The dual heating and cooling can also dull soothe the pain receptors in that area.

There are several alternatives to traditional pain relief creams for carpal tunnel syndrome. Natural gels and creams can provide just as much pain relief without the use of harsh chemicals or medicines. Alternative medicine is becoming an accepted part of treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome. If these creams haven't worked to help alleviate your pain, visit a clinic, like Hand Rehabilitation Specialists, for more help.
