6 Tips For Living With Eczema

Anyone who has developed eczema knows that it is an itchy, uncomfortable condition that can be difficult to live with. Luckily, there are several things that people who suffer from eczema can do to help prevent flare-ups. If you suffer from eczema, use the following tips to keep it under control:

Moisturize Regularly

One of the easiest ways to keep eczema at bay is by regularly moisturizing your skin. It is important to apply lotion after showering, and throughout the day to prevent skin from drying out. Look for a thick lotion that provides as much moisture as possible. Avoid using any type of lotion that has added fragrances or chemicals.

Figure Out Your Triggers

Eczema is triggered differently in each person. Some people may have an eczema breakout when they are really stressed, while others may find that their eczema is worst when they are exposed to products with added fragrances, pet dander, grass, household cleaners or other types of chemicals. After you figure out what your eczema triggers are, you can do your best to avoid exposure to those things.

Keep Your Environment Comfortable

There is not much you can do about the weather outside, but keeping your home at a comfortable temperature can help prevent eczema flare-ups. During the hot and humid summer months, keep the air conditioning running so your skin stays cool. In the winter, you may want to consider running a few cool mist humidifiers to help protect your skin against the very dry, cold air.

Avoid Scratching

While the itch from eczema can be horrific, scratching the patches is one of the worst things you can do. Excessive scratching may actually make the itching worse, and you can also damage the surface of the skin. Consider using cold compresses, moisturizer, or medications to help you when your skin is particularly itchy.

Choose Clothing Carefully

If you suffer from eczema, try to wear breathable cotton or cotton blend clothing as often as possible. Other materials, such as wool, or polyester, may irritate your skin and cause an eczema flare up. In addition, make sure you wash all new clothing with fragrance-free detergent prior to wearing them.

Consult Your Doctor

If you have done everything possible to control your eczema but are still experiencing bad flare ups, make an appointment with a dermatologist. Your dermatologist may prescribe medication that will help control your eczema and take away the itch.
