Tips For Managing Bartholin's Cyst Abscess Pain

If you have developed a Bartholin's gland abscess in your vaginal area, then controlling the excruciating pain is your top priority until the abscess drains. Since this type of abscess is extremely painful, knowing how to manage its pain is vital for getting through the tough days before the abscess either drains or you go have your gynecologist surgically drain it for you. To this end, here are some tips for controlling the pain of your Bartholin's gland abscess:

Tip: Soak in Warm Epsom Salt Baths Multiple Times Each Day

When you have a Bartholin's cyst that has abscessed, you need to soak your vaginal area in warm water with Epsom salt many times each day. You can do so in your bathtub or by using a sitz bath that you place in your toilet. Add at least a cup of Epsom salts to your bath water to help dry out the infected area and help promote its drainage. For a sitz bath, use a tablespoon of Epsom salts in the warmest water you can stand soaking in.

Tip: Never Squeeze the Abscess or Try to Prematurely Drain It

Though you may be tempted to do so, you should never squeeze or try to prematurely drain your own Bartholin's abscess. If you squeeze or pull on the infected area, it can cause the infection to spread and move deeper into the surrounding tissues.

Tip: Apply an Epsom Salt and Baking Soda Paste Directly on the Abscess

During the times that you are not soaking your abscess in a warm bath, you should apply a special drying paste to the area. This paste will help the infection to drain more quickly by removing excess moisture in the area and preventing the infection from spreading.

To make a drying paste, combine equal parts of Epsom salt and baking soda in a small dish. Add enough water to turn the mixture into a thin paste. Apply the paste by dipping a square of gauze into it and then covering the affected area. Reapply the paste after each time you bathe or use the restroom.

Tip: Visit Your Gynecologist and Have the Abscess Drained when it Becomes Too Painful

Finally, if your Bartholin's cyst abscess does not drain within a couple of days and becomes excessively painful to the point that you are unable to sit in a chair, then you should make an emergency appointment with your gynecologist to drain it. Your gynecologist can quickly puncture the infected area and the abscess will drain and immediately feel better.
